Regional innovation – the key to revolutionising health and social care

In an article for National Health Executive, Health Innovation West Midlands (HIWM) Innovation and Commercial Director, Tony Davis, examines how local innovation, such as that seen in the West Midlands, has contributed to improving patient safety and health equity across the region, and nationally, providing thousands of people, in the UK, with better care.

The West Midlands is home to one of the country’s most diverse populations, spanning ethnicities, wealth and health. It has the youngest population in the UK, while, at the same time, being home to a large population of elderly and vulnerable people.

The region has long been a top performer in supporting economic growth and innovation. This backdrop of innovators and SMEs, along with a vibrant healthcare ecosystem, makes it a hotbed for the creation of new, revolutionary, technologies.

It is through the collaborative work of the HIWM and the Meridian Health Innovation Exchange, we can bridge industry and academia to find solutions to improve health and wealth of our communities.

The impact of this pipeline of innovation has helped ensure the improved experience of patients, whilst the success of local business is influencing and driving improvements at a national scale
