Introducing the new Health Innovation West Midlands Management Board
On Tuesday 6th August our new Management Board attended a development day to set the direction of Health Innovation West Midlands (HIWM). Their responsibility is to deliver our vision to transform health and social care through innovation and ensure that HIWM is meeting the needs of the patients and populations we serve.
They were welcomed by Michael Sheppard, HIWM Chair and Tim Jones, HIWM Chief Officer introduced our work. The group talked through their aspirations, opportunities and how they can work together to optimise their role within HIWM.

Dr David Aldulaimi – Clinical Director, South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust
David Aldulaimi was born and educated in London. After graduating from University College and the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, he completed general medical training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Royal London Hospital.
He moved to the West Midlands and specialised in general medicine, working at hospitals across the region. He was appointed as a consultant physician in 2004, initially based in Worcestershire, he moved to Warwick in 2016.
During his undergraduate and postgraduate training, he had the opportunity to support laboratory and clinical research. Since his appointment as a consultant, he has had the opportunity to support management and research teams.
My role as Clinical Director at HIWM
- To support HIWM’s values, including being connected, kind and bold
- To support the discovery, development and deployment of innovation at pace to transform health and social care across the West Midlands
- To support collaboration between academia, industry, healthcare providers, commissioners and citizens across the West Midlands
- To support the development and delivery of HIWM’s strategic objectives, including increasing it visibility locally and nationally
My aspirations for HIWM
To support colleagues and have a positive impact on the health and the wealth of our region.
My favourite innovation
Remote monitoring devices for patients with diabetes. These devices were introduced at pace during Covid and led to sustained improvements in patient care and a reduction in the workload of community nursing teams.
Dr Paul Edmonson-Jones – Chief Medical Officer, Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board
Dr Edmondson-Jones is already well known and respected within the local health and care system, in his previous role as Director of Adult Social Care, Health Integration and Wellbeing and Director of Public Health at Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
He was thrilled to be recognised as the Local Authority Corporate Director of Year at the Management Journal Awards in 2021.
After training in Scotland, he spent 23 years as an Army Doctor, working worldwide, supporting the Gurkha Rifles in the Falklands War of 1982 and commanding the British Medical Battalion with the United Nations in the Former Yugoslavia in 1993.
Dr Edmondson-Jones was awarded the MBE in the Gulf War Honours List in 1992.
He joined the NHS in 2000 and was the Director of Public Health for Portsmouth City Teaching PCT for 12 years before moving as Director of Public Health for City of York Council, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, and Hartlepool Borough Council between 2012 and 2018.
Dr Ananta Dave – Chief Medical Officer, Black Country Integrated Care Board
Dr Ananta Dave is the Chief Medical Officer of the Black Country Integrated Care Board, part of the Black Country Integrated Care System. She is a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist by background and closely involved in undergraduate and post graduate medical education. She was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) in July 2023 in recognition of her work in psychiatry and mental health. Also, in July she was appointed Presidential Lead for Retention and wellbeing at RCPsych.
She was the first female President and is immediate Past President of the British Indian Psychiatric Association (BIPA). In 2022 she was awarded ‘Doctor of the Year’ by BAPIO (British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin).
Dr Dave works regionally and nationally in addressing healthcare inequalities and in developing a diverse & humane leadership culture leading to good quality patient care. She is keenly interested in doctors’ health and wellbeing and was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2019 to study the topic of preventing doctor suicides in the US. She is a Trustee of the charity Doctors in Distress which works to protect the mental health and prevent suicide of healthcare workers.
In addition to her medical qualifications, Dr Dave holds a Master’s in Medical Ethics and Law and is an Honorary Asst. (Clinical) Professor at the University of Nottingham.
My aspirations for HIWM
Innovation, academic rigour and collaboration are an important part of achieving improvements in population health, using resources wisely and eliminating health inequalities. It is vital that ICSs and HINs work closely together. Being appointed to the HIWM Management Board means I can be part of setting strategy, identifying priorities and areas of work for HIWM and increasing awareness of its role within systems
My favourite innovation
My favourite innovation is fitness trackers, helping people to track physical activity.
Kavita Parmar – Chief Commercial Officer and Co-owner, Word360
Kavita is the Chief Commercial Officer and co-owner of Word360. She is the driving force behind business growth and innovation.
Kavita is focused on driving change in the understanding of mental health in minority communities and works closely with the NHS and leading charities to deliver service level improvement in patient care that lead to positive outcomes through better communication.
Word360 have recently been recognised for their outstanding contribution to the NHS by winning ‘Supplier of the Year 2019’ at the NHS Excellence in Service awards.
Kavita is on the Executive Committee at the ABCC part of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce. She is also on the steering committee for the West Midlands Combined Authority Mental Health Commission. Kavita is also a Non-Executive Director for Monsoon Venue Group.
My aspirations for HIWM
Being appointed to the HIWM Management Board is an exciting prospect. It means having the opportunity to contribute to shaping the strategy and identifying priorities for HIWM, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of healthcare innovation in the region. By serving on the board, I can help increase awareness of the important work that HIWM does within the healthcare system, and advocate for the needs of patients and communities in driving positive change and improving healthcare outcomes.
My aspirations for the future include continuing to drive innovation and improvement in healthcare through leadership roles in organisations like HIWM. I hope to leverage my experience and expertise to develop and implement new strategies that address the most pressing healthcare challenges of our time. I am particularly interested in exploring the potential of digital health, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.
My favourite innovation
Very cliché but it would have to be the smartphone. It has transformed the way we communicate, access information, and interact with the world around us. It has also democratised access to knowledge, making it possible for anyone with an internet connection to learn and explore new ideas.
Joanne Williams – Interim Chief Executive Officer at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust
In September 2024 Jo was appointed as the Interim CEO of The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.
Previously Jo was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH) since May 2019. She joined the Trust in an interim role as Chief Operating Officer (COO) in June 2017 on secondment from University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, where she was Deputy Chief Operating Officer for 3 years.
She has worked in a variety of senior management roles in several acute trusts’ including (UHSM) Wythenshawe Hospital and Chesterfield Royal Hospital delivering operational performance, leading service transformation and patient care improvement projects. As well as 14 years in NHS operational management, she also worked in procurement in the NHS, as a capital buyer for Nuffield Hospitals commissioning The Manor Hospital in Oxford and 9 years as a buyer supplying the manufacturing industry.
Since joining the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Jo has led the Trust on a journey of strategic transformation which has resulted in impressive achievements, awards, outstanding staff experience and being ranked ‘the most inclusive NHS organisation’ in the Inclusive Companies top 50 listing. She is passionate about building an inclusive organisational culture where everyone can be themselves and flourish to achieve their full potential.
Krysia Dziedzic PhD FCSP – Impact Accelerator Unit Director, Keele University
Krysia is the Dean for Research in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and Director of the Impact Accelerator Unit at Keele University. She holds a Professorship of Musculoskeletal Therapies Versus Arthritis and a National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Senior Investigator Award in Primary Care.
A Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, and NIHR Health Research Mentor, Krysia is also a member of the NIHR Knowledge Mobilisation Alliance and the NIHR Race Equality Public Action Group.
In April 2024 Krysia was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Osteoarthritis Research Society International for her significant contributions to the advancement of the science associated with osteoarthritis.
Richard Devereaux-Phillips – Director of Strategy, Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI)
Richard joined the ABHI in June 2015 with over 20 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical and medical devices industries.
Richard holds a first degree in Sports Science from Brighton Polytechnic and a Master’s in Health Economics Research and Management from Keele University. He served from 2003 until 2013 as a member of the Technology Appraisal Advisory Committee of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and also on the Programme Advisory Group of the Healthcare Quality and Information Authority in Ireland. Richard was Chair of the South West Academic Health Sciences Network during 2015. He was a Non Executive Director of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham for 7 years from 2017 and chaired the Programme Board of the Small Business Research Initiative Healthcare for three years until stepping down in November 2019. He currently holds a number of advisory positions on government policy and research initiatives, and is a longstanding member of the Institute of Healthcare Management.
In his role at ABHI, Richard oversees the Association’s policy and communications activities as well as working closely with his CEO on senior government engagement and the future shape of the organisation.
My aspirations for HIWM
I have been a long-standing and, at times, outspoken supporter of the HIN project since its inception in 2013. The network was designed as an innovation adoption mechanism as described in 2011’s Innovation, Health and Wealth, which was the Department of Health’s response to a new Prime Minister challenging all spending departments to contribute to economic growth. With the new Secretary of State stating that the department will extend its focus to boost economic growth, I am looking forward to helping ensure that the HIN delivers of its intended purpose of improving the health and wealth of our region.
My favourite innovation
The implantable cardiac pacemaker. An engineered solution to a clinical problem which embodies the collaborative, iterative approach to innovation that persists in the HealthTech industry today.
Neil Hanley – Pro Vice-Chancellor, University of Birmingham
Neil joined the University of Birmingham as Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Medical and Dental Sciences in September 2023 and is also a practising Consultant Endocrinologist in the NHS.
Neil was first made full professor in 2006 and is a past president of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland. Neil was at the University of Manchester from 2008-2023, becoming Director of Research and Innovation at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust in 2016, and Vice-Dean (Research and Innovation) in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health in 2020. During this time, he has also served on the Council of his UK professional body, the Society for Endocrinology, and on the Board of the International Society of Endocrinology.
An expert in early human development and aspects of stem cell biology, Neil has held doctoral, intermediate, and senior clinical fellowships from Wellcome, NIHR and Wellcome respectively, and additional funding as lead investigator from MRC, BBSRC and EPSRC, among others. During the last decade, this has led to outputs in places such as eLife, PNAS, and several Nature journals with 12,000 citations. His current partnership as chief investigator with Innovate UK and industry leaders has translated collaborative discovery science into integrated novel diagnostics for the early detection of liver disease.
He recognises the critical role of innovation in the Life Sciences and Healthcare. In Manchester, he was a key player in helping to place industries within the university and NHS setting and is now continuing this work focused on healthcare outcomes and economic growth in the West Midlands, for example through Birmingham Health Partners and the Birmingham Health Innovation Campus.
Neil has a passion for education and training, having established an academy in Manchester for those embarking on their own research careers. He directed the Wellcome-funded PhD programme for healthcare professionals for 8 years across the Universities of Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield, led the future vision of NIHR’s 2016 national review of training, and chairs the Molecular, Cellular & Physiological Sciences Early Career Advisory Group at Wellcome.
Professor Andy Hardy – Chief Executive Officer of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust
Andy is Chief Executive Officer of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW), one of the largest tertiary acute Trusts in the country.
Andy was appointed Chief Executive Officer in 2010. For the six years prior to that he was Chief Finance Officer of UHCW, as well as Deputy Chief Executive Officer from 2008-2010.

In January 2016 Andy was appointed Professor of Industry at the University of Warwick and in 2022 awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Business Administration at Coventry University in recognition of his leadership and significant contribution to healthcare provision across Coventry and Warwickshire. In April 2023 he accepted the appointment of Professor for the Vice Chancellor’s Health Advisory Board, Coventry University.

Andy is also a Director of Albany Theatre Trust, Coventry, and a Trustee of ExtraCare.
In August 2023, Andy was appointed as Deputy Chair for the newly established National Improvement Board.
Working closely with David Fillingham CBE, he will lead and support the identification and delivery of national improvement priorities in line with NHS IMPACT and associated improvement approaches.
