Multicultural STOMP

About the project

STOMP stands for stopping the over medication of people with a learning disability, autism or both with psychotropic medicines. It is a national project supported by NHS England and NHS Improvement. (NHSE/I)

At Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust (BCHC), experience has shown that some people from ethnic minority backgrounds had:

  • Difficulty reporting and recording challenging behaviour
  • Engaged less with non-pharmacological strategies
  • Wanted medication first-line for challenging behaviour
  • Language barriers: communication is crucial in establishing  the cause of behaviours of concern, which guides appropriate management. This can be overcome through multi-linguistic skills, though not everyone has this.

To overcome these challenges, the Multicultural (MC) STOMP project has emerged within the Trust, with resources produced being endorsed by NHSE/I, and will appear on a new, locally developed STOMP website.

HIWM will provide support and expertise to this project, including the dissemination of messages and resources to the multi-disciplinary teams (MDT), families, carers and patients.

Project ambitions

MC STOMP is the first initiative of its kind in UK aimed at improving STOMP implementation in people from ethnic minority backgrounds. Through raising awareness with prescribers, the wider MDT, families, carers and patients, including access to resources, the programme promotes flexible MDT approach and improves cultural awareness within services to meet the needs of families from multiple backgrounds.
